The past has been described as “public property”, which raises the question of ownership. As public property, it must be open and available for diverse people to use for different purposes. The question then becomes: who is investing and identifying with which aspects of the past, which somehow, make them their own?
These were the opening remarks of Prof. Bethwell A. Ogot, chancellor Moi university and Emeritus Prof. of history, Maseno university on the lecture "Who, if Anyone, owns the past? Reflections on the meaning of public history." The lecture was held at Kisumu hotel, Kisumu by the AAS in conjuction with Maseno university. Click Here to download the lecture |
