The Carnegie-IAS Regional Initiative in Science and Education (RISE) will develop human capacity through science and technology training and research in a regional context in sub-Saharan Africa, enabling individuals to use S&T to contribute to national and regional economic development. RISE, with its focus on training through rich and varied exposure to facilities and expertise in multiple settings, will complement initiatives that focus on strengthening universities, research centers, science academies, and other institutions.The African Academy of Sciences and SIG convened a two-day workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, in June 2007, to plan RISE. Sponsored by Carnegie Corporation of New York, the workshop brought together scientists, educators, administrators, government officials, and development experts from Africa and abroad to help shape the initiative.
