TWAS-ROSSA stands for The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World - Regional Office for Sub-Saharan Africa. TWAS-ROSSA is currently hosted by The African Academy of Sciences, AAS in Nairobi, KENYA. The AAS Provides administrative support as well as office space for the TWAS-ROSSA office.

The main objective of TWAS-ROSSA is to promote the acitvities of TWAS and its affiliated organisations in Africa, including training of fellows, issuing of grants and awards and networking amongst its members. The TWAS-ROSSA regional office currently undertakes the following duties and responsibilites:

  • Enhancing the visibility of TWAS among young and promising scientists, policy makers and media, through the organisation of public lectures, discussion meetings, television programmes, and local ewspapers/magazines.
  • Identifying eminent scientists in the region and nominating them for TWAS membership and awards.
  • Assessing the vitality and effectiveness of TWAS's activities in the region.
  • Organising activities in areas of science and technology of critical importance to the region. These activities will include periodic meetings of TWAS members, TWAS symposia and lectures.

TWAS-ROSSA also works to establish linkages with existing TWAS National Chapters in Africa and provides capacity building support to these Chapters. There are five TWAS National chapters in Africa.

  • Madagascar Chapter based at the National Institute for Nuclear Sciences and Technology
  • Senegal Chapter based at the Academie des Science et Technique du Senegal
  • Zimbabwe Chapter based at the Scientific and Industrial Research and development Centre
  • Kenya Chapter based at the African Academy of Sciences.
  • Ghana Chapter based at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences
