The Science and Technology – Europe Africa Project (ST-EAP) is a scientific and technological cooperation framework between European and African scientists, funded by the European Union. ST-EAP began its activities in mid 2007. Its main objective is to create an appropriate mechanism for the enhancement of the participation of African researchers in EU funding schemes. African institutions will also benefit by increasing their S&T base and will also obtain tremendous opportunities for increasing their human resource development. ST-EAP also seeks to create an increased awareness of the role of the European Union's Framework Programmes (FPs). The project is funded by the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) but will focus on cooperation in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) and the modalities of the FPs in general. The main African partners involved in this project are The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) on behalf of the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) in Nairobi Kenya and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa. The project shall pursue its objectives to strengthen the EU/Africa science and technology policy dialogue, inform and prepare optimal engagement of African scientists within the FP7 and other relevant S&T co-operation activities, by: - Gathering and disseminating information about the EU S&T programmes open to African institutions and African academics
- Identifying centers of excellence in Africa and their research priority needs in Africa, and reporting them to the relevant services in the EC
- Identifying existing African centers/networks of excellence in FP7 thematic priority areas, and promote networking between them and European research consortia
- Designing an appropriate mechanism and associated implementation plan for enhancing the participation of African researchers in EU programmes.
